She is a Bengali born on March 21 of 1978. At the age of 14 she did a role in her father's film Biyar Phool in 1992. Since it was a not successful film, she completed her college education.

But in 1998 she acted in Ghulam with Aarmir Khan which did very well in the box office gave a wonderful breakthrough in her career. From then she became the successfull partner of hindi film industry.

She acted almost all leading actors in Hindi Film Industry. She also won Filmfare Awards six-time.

She born in a film oriented family. Her father Ram Mukharjee is one of the best Bengali director who laid foundation for Filmalaya Studios. Her mother Krishna is a playback singer. Her brother Raja Mukharjee is a producer cum director in Bengali.

Her aunt Debashree Roy is a Bengali fil actress who won the national award for her excellent acting in Bengali films.

Her cousin Kajol is a well knowed bollywood actress.

Apart from film, Rani is also an Odissi dancer. She completed her education in Mumbai which helped her learn more about Bollywood.
